July is Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month!

What is Juvenile Arthritis (JA)?

Juvenile Arthritis is an umbrella term used to describe all of the rheumatic and inflammatory diseases that develop in children under the age of 16. Most kinds of JA are autoimmune or autoinflammatory diseases caused by a malfunction in the immune system.

The most common side effects are joint inflammation, swelling, as well as pain and tenderness. However, JA can be insidious. Some types of JA have few or no joint symptoms or only affect the skin and internal organs.

Although there is not a cure for JA, with early diagnosis and proper treatment remission is possible.

The goals of JA treatments are to:

  • Relieve symptoms
  • Control pain
  • Slow down or stop inflammation
  • Preserve joint function and mobility

Treatments beneficial for JA offered at Legge Health Clinic are:

  • Functional Movement Therapy (FMT)
